CANTON, Ohio — The skeletal remains of an unidentified man discovered in Stark County over four years ago have been identified as Michael Leach, marking a significant breakthrough in the investigation into his death, officials announced today.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost and Stark County Sheriff George T. Maier revealed that Leach, born October 21, 1957, and last known to reside in Dover, Tuscarawas County, has been confirmed through advanced DNA testing. Yost expressed relief and support, stating, “When an unknown person is identified, dignity is restored and there is a renewal of hope for justice. I commend the efforts of BCI and Sheriff Maier for restoring Michael Leach’s identity. Those who loved and knew him can now grieve their friend.”

The identification was made possible by the DNA Doe Project, a nonprofit organization specializing in solving cases of unidentified remains using investigative genetic genealogy. Sheriff Maier emphasized the importance of continued investigation and public assistance, saying, “Identifying Michael Leach after so many years brings a sense of closure to his family and the community. This achievement underscores the importance of collaboration and the relentless pursuit of justice by our dedicated team and community partners. Our investigation continues, and we urge anyone with information to come forward.”

The skeletal remains were found on March 31, 2020, by an oil-well worker in a rural area off Sandy Avenue SE in Canton. At the time of discovery, Leach was wearing a navy blue, white, and yellow T-shirt, black shorts, and tennis shoes. Authorities believe the remains had been exposed to the elements for at least two years prior to being found.

The identification of Leach’s remains marks the conclusion of the first phase of the investigation, which involved a partnership between the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and the Stark County Sheriff’s Office. In August 2021, a forensic reconstruction was revealed, followed by advanced digital images released two years later.

With Leach’s identity now confirmed, the investigation into his death is ongoing. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the Stark County Sheriff’s Office at 330-430-3823.
