11 Dead and 35 Injured in Mass Casualty Event in New Orleans on New Years

NEW ORLEANS, LA — January 1, 2024 — A tragic incident early this morning on Bourbon Street has resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries after a vehicle drove into a crowd of pedestrians. The incident, which occurred around 3:17 a.m. at the intersection of Bourbon and Canal streets, prompted an immediate response from the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) and other law enforcement agencies.

Deadly Crash and Mass Casualties

The NOPD received reports of a vehicle plowing into a group of pedestrians on Bourbon Street. The vehicle struck several individuals before crashing. Upon arrival, officers found that 10 victims had been declared dead at the scene. In addition, approximately 35 more individuals were injured, with many transported by emergency medical services (EMS) to local hospitals for treatment. At this time, no updates on the conditions of those injured have been provided.

Suspect Opens Fire on Officers

Following the crash, the suspect reportedly exited the vehicle and opened fire on responding officers. Law enforcement returned fire, striking the suspect, who was later declared deceased at the scene. The identity of the suspect is being withheld as the investigation continues.

Officer Injuries

During the exchange of gunfire, two NOPD officers were injured after being struck by gunfire. Both officers were quickly transported to a local hospital, where they are currently listed in stable condition. Authorities have not released further details on the officers’ injuries at this time.
