For NFL fans, the arduous off season is about to come to an end with the start of training camp, with new players being evaluated and veterans blowing off the cobwebs as they prepare to battle it out in the coming season. For the Cleveland Browns, 2019’s training camp will be more important than in previous years. With the final roster of players being chosen from an initial selection of 90, it will be difficult to predict which players will make the final cut.
Browns fans have plenty to be excited about. After joining in 2017, the team’s General Manager, John Dorsey, promised to acquire “real players” for the team. In 2018 he added Jarvis Landry, Damarious Randall, Baker Mayfield and Denzel Ward. The positions played by these new additions were some of the biggest areas of improvement for the Browns last season. 2019 is no different, with a number of new signings promising to deliver big improvements for the team.
Playoffs?
The Cleveland Browns joined the NFL in 1950, and 2019 will be their 67th season as part of the league. During this long history they have won 4 NFL Championships, claimed victory in their conference 11 times (7 of which in their first 7 years), and become champions of their division 21 times. However, the last of these way back in 1989 and have only made the playoffs twice more since then.
The team is therefore looking to break this long drought, and after firing head coach, Hue Jackson, and offensive coordinator, Todd Haley. The Browns’ performance showed big improvements following these sackings, which was refreshing after Jackson lost every game in 2017. 2019 is therefore probably the best chance the team has had for several years of making it to the playoffs, but only time will tell.
Superbowl?
Given that the team hasn’t made it to the Super Bowl for decades, history is certainly not on their side. However, given the big improvements made by the Cleveland Browns under John Dorsey, it perhaps is no longer an impossibility. Currently, Oddschecker ranks the Cleveland Browns 7th most likely team to win the 2020 Super Bowl.
With an improved line up both on the field and off it, the Cleveland Browns look set to continue the improvements in performance the team saw in 2018. Whilst they are still unlikely to reach the Super Bowl this season, it would certainly be unfair to rule them out of reaching the playoffs in 2019. After a terrible 2017 and a similar start to 2018, the Browns look like they’re back on the way up.
