The public is invited to attend the annual 9/11 Memorial and Battle of the Bands hosted by Pickaway-Ross Career & Technology Center on Friday at the Chillicothe campus.
Since 2008, the Pickaway-Ross Battle of the Bands has brought together marching bands from PRCTC-affiliated high schools for a morning of music, fun and fellowship. The event was created as a way to connect PRCTC to its affiliated high schools and vice versa.
The musical event follows the annual 9/11 Memorial, organized and conducted each year by Ed Ryan, Criminal Justice instructor, and his students. The memorial will start at 9 a.m., and the first band will perform about 9:40 a.m.
The winner of the preceding year’s Battle of the Bands performs the National Anthem during the 9/11 Memorial, tying together the two events. Unioto High School was the 2014 winner.
Students and staff members go outside to the front of the building for the 9/11 Memorial. After the Memorial concludes, students return to their classroom and are then dismissed outside to various sides of the building to watch the bands perform.
Each band performs while marching around the building, stopping at three pre-determined locations. During Pickaway-Ross’ lunch periods, students and staff members cast their votes for their favorite performance.
The winner is announced before the end of the school day and arrangements are made for the Pickaway-Ross Cup to be presented by Superintendent Dennis Franks to the winning school at a home football game or pep rally.
