Henry Wilson “Hank” Turner, 84, of Ashville, died on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015, after a battle with lung cancer.
Henry was born on Nov. 11, 1930, in Florence, South Carolina, to William Oscar Turner and Verdie Lee Haynes Turner. He was the middle child of seven.
He retired from the US Air Force after 25 years of service as a flight engineer and flight mechanic. He was stationed at San Antonio and Austin, Texas, and at Rickenbacker and Dayton in Ohio. Henry also did two tours in Vietnam. He traveled to Hawaii, Germany and Japan during his service in the Air Force and survived a plane crash in Hawaii.
After his retirement from the Air Force, he worked as a mechanic. Henry was a member and former Post commander of the American Legion in Lithopolis. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially in the woods. He had fond memories of his childhood job as a newspaper boy.
He had a good sense of humor and enjoyed laughing with friends and family. Henry had many pets during his lifetime, and they brought him much love and pleasure.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth “Liz” Greeson Turner; children, Rebecca “Becky” (Rick) Caisse, Paul (Cindy) Turner and Beth (Bennie) Goble; grandchild, Jennifer Scheffel; step-grandchildren, Dawn and Isaac Caisse and Olivia and Torry Putman; great-grandsons, Ambrose DeFranco and Avery Cotrell; step-great-grandson, Mason Marquardt; great-great-grandson, Aiden DeFranco; and brothers, Keene (Lupe) Turner Sr. and Cal (Linda) Turner. Henry is also survived by Elizabeth’s three sisters, Dorothy Morsch, Joyce Craig and Tanya Heidgerken, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Also surviving are Henry’s beloved dog, Sister, and cats, BC and Missy.
Henry was predeceased by his parents, William and Verdie Turner; brother, William Oscar (Irene) Turner Jr.; and sisters, Elvira “Sister” (Darby) Flowers, Bertha (Legrand) McClellan and Mary Turner Espegren.
No funeral or memorial services are planned. Cremation will take place. Arrangements by Myers-Woodyard Funeral Home in Groveport.
