Melvin J. Shaver, age 93, of Hilliard, “Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home”. Melvin went home with his Lord on September 25, 2017, peacefully in his sleep. He was a skilled wood worker and retired from Columbus City Schools as a carpenter/maintenance employee. Melvin was a member of Hilliard Senior Center where he enjoyed all the activities and was noted as their favorite coffee maker. He attended Cypress Wesleyan Church as a member of the Voyagers Bible Class. He served his country in the European Theatre of war in WWII as a member of the Army attached to the 9th Air Force. He took great pride in flying the American Flag daily at his home. Melvin enjoyed golfing, playing corn hole and cards with friends. He was a faithful and loving husband, beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather who enjoyed traveling, camping and spending time with his family and friends.
Preceded in death by parents Hurley Melvin and Myrtle Shaver, infant grandson, sister Vivian and brother Don. Survived by loving wife of 73 years Minnie (Upperman), children Judy (Willie) Davis, Melvin R. (Cindy) Shaver, Linda (Mike) Bryant and David (Melissa) Shaver, 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, sister Doris Wilkes, brother-in-law Jack Upperman, nephews, nieces and many friends. Family will receive friends Thursday 6-8 pm at the TIDD FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 5265 Norwich St., Hilliard, OH 43026 where funeral service will be held 11 am Friday.
