(COLUMBUS, Ohio)—Today, Attorney General Mike DeWine announced a partnership with the NRA to bring their National School Shield Security Assessor Training program to schools in Ohio. The first training was held on October 24th and 25th in Wellston, Ohio. School personnel, school resource officers, and law enforcement officers representing more than 20 Ohio school districts committed to attend.
The National School Shield’s Security Assessor Training brings in national experts on security to train school officials and law enforcement about security assessment techniques, what to look for with existing building security, and what improvements could be made to buildings. Course participants receive certification to bring what they’ve learned back to their own school districts. Schools will also be eligible to apply for grant funding to make building safety improvements through the NRA’s foundation.

The National School Shield program began as an initiative focused on improving school security in an effort to help prevent national tragedies at educational institutions in America. National School Shield is funded by the NRA Foundation, so there is no cost to the school district or the law enforcement members that attend.
Based on feedback from this training, the Attorney General’s office is working to bring this training to other areas of Ohio in the future.
Attorney General DeWine has made protecting Ohio’s children and school safety a priority as attorney general. DeWine raised awareness of Ohio’s school safety plan laws after tragedies in Chardon and Connecticut. In 2012, he formed Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine’s School Safety Task Force to make recommendations on best practice for school safety planning and preparation. In 2013, DeWine, through the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy, offered active shooter training for the first time to educators in Ohio, tailoring courses often offered to law enforcement for educators and school staff.
