ARKANSAS – According to Keith Stephens, Chief of Communications at the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission an Arkansas hunter was killed after a deer that he had just shot attacked him.
Wildlife officials in a press release said that Thomas Alexander, 66, shot the buck using a muzzleloader while hunting near Yellville, Marion County. He then went to check the deer to see if it was dead and the deer got up and attacked Alexander.
According to a Newsweek article, despite his injuries, Alexander was able to call his family who alerted emergency responders. He was rushed to the hospital but medical staff were not able to save him.
Exact cause of death has yet to be determined by officials said that the deer may have killed him but a heart attack cannot be ruled out yet.
Hunters should always let a deer lie for 30 minutes before approaching to be certain the animal has passed. Rarely do deer attack but mostly flee, but can be aggressive if cornered or protecting babies.
