PICKAWAY – The Pickaway Park District has filed for a grant specifically targeting more recreation on the areas waterways by adding secure canoe and kayak access on Big Darby Creek.

The proposed plan would add a 100 foot by 70 foot parking lot with a connected road. The park is currently working with landowner Jim Cook at his property on US 23 on a new location located at the southern portion of Cooks Creek Golf Course. This new location is being discussed from the old location originally discussed off Little Walnut Creek because the new location will have more parking, overflow parking options and better access from US23.

The total project cost of this location has been submitted to be 55,000 dollars that with the approved grant will have 100% reimbursement of those monies.

Pickaway County parks is still looking to secure additional access points along the Scioto River and Darby Creek for access for Canoe and Kayak, and are currently discussing with several entities for easements along the waterbodies for more access for this effort to bring more kayak and canoe access to our rivers and creeks.

Pickaway Parks will know by early summer of the grant was awarded, and at that time will be hosting a public meeting to address any concerns from neighbors for the project.

Park board believes that not only will this give Pickaway County more access to recreation but will also give surrounding counties the ability to come into Pickaway and enjoy what we have to offer giving more opportunities for tourism in the area.
