Lawrence County – On May 26 Lawrence County Agricultural Society unanimously voted to cancel the 2020 Lawrence County Fair.
The Society was exploring a way to operated a junior Fair to permit 4-H and FFA exhibitors to show their animals, but cost of a modified junior fair was prohibitive.
“It is not economically feasible to operate any form of a Fair this year,” said the Lawrence County Agricultural Society, “We operated on sponsorships and gate receipts, we are prohibited from having grandstand events and rides this year and sponsors are suffering from the effects of the shutdown. Thus we have no way of raising money to support the fair.”
“This was a tough decision, the fair board felt they had to consider the future of the Fair and preserve the Fair for years to come. We have been waiting on the State to give us guidelines, but had to finally make a decision.”
Plans are getting put together to contact buyers to make contributions to the Fair Sales Committee to use to provide some benefits for 4-H and FFA members that have completed their projects. Most already have their animals and have been caring for them for months. There is no guarantee, but its being explored.
“We are aware of the difficult situation this puts all 4-H and FFA members in and are truly sorry for the impact this has created, but that is the times we are dealing with.
