The show will be open for viewing at 135 W. Main Street, Circleville, on Fridays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. from March 5 through March 21.
The exhibit will feature approximately 30 of Callihan’s acrylic paintings comprised of mostly landscape and wildlife paintings. As some of his hobbies include fishing and hunting, many of his works are scenes from places he has visited including Alaska, the Canadian Rockies, Colorado and all points west. He enjoys the challenge of trying to recreate the same color and tones of his subjects and seeing the unexpected results. Callihan is also a woodworker and has made many custom frames for his work.
Callihan’s professional career included positions in the medical and real estate fields as well as running a fishing charter on Lake Erie for several years. He started painting while recuperating from a series of five back surgeries in the late 80s while watching TV artist Bob Ross, who mainly used oil media. Later, another TV artist Jerry Yarnell inspired him to try acrylic media which Callihan mainly uses to this day. Ross and Yarnell can still be seen on most public television stations.
Callihan’s artwork has won several awards with the most recent being Best of Show at the “Year Without A Show” in October sponsored by ArtsaRound.
The artist routinely works on two to three pieces at a time, despite some health issues. When asked how he knows when a painting is finished, he answers, “They are never done!”
Callihan estimates he has given away more than 100 pieces to family and friends through the years. He said, “This was mainly to inspire and hopefully introduce others to the pleasure of creating art.”
ArtsaRound is a non-profit organization formed in 2001, dedicated to supporting art and artists in Pickaway County and the regional area.
The ArtsaRound Gallery on the Original Circle is housed in the former Marfield Bank Building owned by the Pickaway County Historical Society. This rare pie-shaped property was part of the original circle of Circleville. The gallery is operated by local volunteers, and hours may vary based on volunteer availability, special classes, gallery events, and other advertised downtown events.
