POWELL – Baby Pygmy slow Loris yes thats a mouthful for such a tiny little creature, that was born at the Columbus Zoo recently.
The fuzzy baby was born Feb. 24 to 9-year-old mother Gouda and 9-year-old father Muenster.
Pygmy slow Loris a “vulnerable species” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species as the result of habitat loss and wildlife trafficking for the illegal and devastating pet trade.
These nocturnal primitive primates, live in southeast Asia eat bugs, berries, and whatever they like.
Watch out though, these creatures are venomous! Only a few mammals in the world carry venom. Loris manufacture a toxin in their elbows when licked a bite from one of these animals could put you in the hospital.
According to the Columbus zoo the baby is currently off display for now, parents are taking good care of the baby and in about six months old he/she will come out to play.
“The pairing of Gouda and Muenster was recommended by the Species Survival Plan® (SSP), a program coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to maintain genetic diversity of threatened and endangered species in human care.”
