Darby Township, Ohio (February 16, 2024) – A collision between a semi-truck and a car on US Route 62 in Pickaway County resulted in one fatality and injuries to two others, according to Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey.
The accident occurred on Wednesday, February 15th, at approximately 12:46 PM. Deputies responded to reports of a flipped semi-truck that had struck a pole and was smoking. Upon arrival, they found a blue 2019 Peterbilt semi-truck that had collided with a 2022 gray Hyundai.
Investigators determined that the semi-truck, driven by 52-year-old Paul J. Marks of Millersport, Ohio, was traveling southbound when it struck the Hyundai in the southbound lane. The Hyundai, driven by 40-year-old Nicole A. Van Gundy of Orient, Ohio, had allegedly proceeded through the intersection at Five Points Pike before the collision.
Tragically, Ms. Van Gundy was pronounced dead at the scene by Sterling Joint EMS. Mr. Marks sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Grant Medical Center. An 8-year-old passenger in the Hyundai also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Sheriff Hafey expressed his gratitude to several agencies who assisted at the scene, including the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Ohio Department of Transportation, Tri County Fire, Sterling Joint EMS, Box 65, Pickaway County EMA, Eitel’s Towing, Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, American Electric Power, and the Pickaway County Coroner.
The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash.
