SUNBURY, OH – May 1, 2024 – Petland stores across central Ohio have joined forces to provide vital support to the Humane Society of Delaware County, following the rescue of over 40 dogs from a situation of alleged abuse and neglect.
In a heartwarming gesture, Petland stores in central Ohio collectively donated 1,500 pounds of dry dog food, along with canned dog food, pet supplies, treats, and toys to assist the Humane Society in meeting the urgent needs of the rescued dogs. Additionally, Petland Charities, a 501c3 non-profit organization, presented a generous check for $1,000 to aid in covering unexpected expenses incurred during the care of the rescued animals.
The initiative was spearheaded by Paige Edwards, manager of Petland East Broad Street in Columbus, who was deeply moved by media coverage highlighting the distressing conditions the dogs were living in. “Having rescued dogs myself, witnessing the conditions they endured was profoundly upsetting and personal,” remarked Edwards. “I knew the shelter would require significant assistance in caring for these animals, so I reached out to my colleagues to organize support.”
Emily Gieger, manager of Petland Grove City, echoed Edwards’ sentiments, expressing her shock at the sheer number of dogs in need and their proximity to home. “Witnessing a shelter take in such a large number of dogs in dire need, especially in our community, was truly heartbreaking,” said Gieger. “When Paige approached me about extending a helping hand, I was eager to lend my support.”
The compassionate response quickly gained momentum, with all six central Ohio Petland locations rallying to collect donations. Jenna Wester, manager of Petland Lewis Center, emphasized the importance of community support in times of crisis. “As a longtime member of the Delaware community and an animal lover, I felt compelled to assist in any way possible,” said Wester. “By uniting as a Petland team, we were able to provide substantial aid to the shelter and the rescued dogs.”
The Humane Society of Delaware County expressed profound gratitude for Petland’s generosity, acknowledging the significant impact of the donations. Jana Cassidy, Executive Director of the Humane Society, thanked Petland for their unwavering support, stating, “We are incredibly grateful for the donations received, which have provided vital assistance to these animals in need.”
Reflecting on the collaborative effort, Jenna Wester expressed hope for continued support for the shelter and its ongoing efforts to prepare the rescued dogs for adoption. “By coming together as a community, we have alleviated some of the burden on the shelter staff, who are tirelessly working to rehabilitate these animals,” said Wester. “Our commitment is to continue providing assistance wherever possible.”
