West Jefferson, May 12, 2024 – A swift and coordinated response from law enforcement agencies was initiated following reports of an active shooter at the Amazon CMH5 building, located at 6400 State Route 29. The incident, which occurred at approximately 4:43 pm, prompted a rapid deployment of officers from various agencies to the scene in West Jefferson.
Responding to the call for assistance were officers from the West Jefferson Police Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Plain City Police Department, London Police Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Jefferson Township Fire Department, and Prairie Township Fire Department. Their collective efforts led to the thorough clearance of the building, ensuring the safety of both occupants and potential victims.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported at the initial scene in West Jefferson, although at least one shot was fired within the Amazon facility, causing damage to the building. It was confirmed that the suspect involved in the incident was an employee of Amazon, who fled the scene in a vehicle prior to the arrival of law enforcement officers.
Subsequently, the suspect was located by officers in Columbus, where a second incident ensued. In a tragic turn of events, the suspect opened fire on officers, resulting in one Columbus Police Officer sustaining injuries. The wounded officer was promptly transported to Grant Hospital for treatment and is currently in stable condition. Regrettably, the suspect was later pronounced deceased at Doctors West Hospital.
The Columbus Police Department, in conjunction with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), has initiated an investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Simultaneously, investigations at both the West Jefferson and Columbus locations remain active and ongoing as authorities work to ascertain the full extent of the incident.
