COLUMBUS – State Representative Rodney Creech (R-West Alexandria) has unveiled new legislation aimed at safeguarding the well-being of professional athletes by mandating the use of natural grass fields in professional sports stadiums. Joining Creech as a sponsor of the bill is State Representative Terrance Upchurch (D-Cleveland).
The proposed legislation stipulates that professional stadiums must adopt fields comprised of at least 90% natural grass, maintained to industry standard levels for optimal performance.
“Ohio boasts two exceptional NFL franchises that are integral to our state’s economy and cultural fabric,” remarked Creech. “This legislation underscores our commitment to prioritizing the safety of professional athletes and supporting Ohio’s vibrant sports industry.”
The bill comes in response to concerns regarding the heightened risk of injuries associated with turf fields. Presently, 15 NFL stadiums utilize natural grass surfaces, while an equal number rely on synthetic turf.
As the bill awaits assignment of a bill number and House committee, Creech and Upchurch remain steadfast in their advocacy for the well-being of professional athletes and the integrity of Ohio’s sports landscape.
