COLUMBUS, Ohio – Calling all outdoor enthusiasts with a passion for conservation and public safety! The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is now accepting applications for its upcoming class of Natural Resources Officer cadets. This exciting opportunity offers candidates the chance to protect and patrol Ohio’s expansive state parks, forests, natural preserves, and waterways.
From seasoned law enforcement professionals to newcomers eager to start their careers in nature conservation, ODNR encourages applications from individuals committed to safeguarding Ohio’s natural resources.

Ideal candidates for the program are active, outdoor enthusiasts who relish the prospect of spending their careers immersed in Ohio’s diverse landscapes. As a Natural Resources Officer, duties include law enforcement, public service, educational outreach, and community engagement.
Selected candidates will undergo a rigorous selection process including interviews and pre-employment evaluations. Successful applicants will receive specialized ODNR training followed by attendance at the Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training Academy for a comprehensive five-month program. Certified peace officers in Ohio will bypass academy training and immediately commence field training.
Applications are open until August 4, with specific requirements including U.S. citizenship, a minimum age of 21, and possession of a valid driver’s license. Educational prerequisites include an associate degree, completion of an undergraduate core program, or relevant experience in fields such as natural resources, wildlife management, criminal justice, environmental law enforcement, or military service.
Candidates must also pass background checks, medical and psychological evaluations, drug screenings, and meet swim and physical fitness standards. Successful recruits will be assigned to designated state park areas based on their preferences.
