COLUMBUS, OH – August 26, 2024 – The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) has issued an Air Quality Alert for today, Monday, August 26, due to expected high levels of ground-level ozone. The alert affects Delaware, Fairfield, Franklin, and Licking counties, where air pollution is forecasted to reach levels classified as “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” on the Air Quality Index (AQI) scale, with today’s AQI expected to be 101.
The region is experiencing partly to mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-90s, conditions that are expected to enhance ozone formation. Additionally, calm to light westerly winds will limit the dispersion of pollutants, causing higher concentrations of ozone to accumulate.
The AQI scale, which ranges from 0 to 500, indicates the level of health concern associated with air quality. An AQI value above 100 signifies that the air quality is “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups,” which includes children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD. These groups may experience an increase in symptoms and are advised to limit outdoor activities or schedule them for the morning.

To help mitigate air pollution, MORPC recommends several actions:
- Explore Commute Options: Utilize alternatives to driving alone by visiting Gohio Commute at https://morpc.gohio.com/ or calling 1.888.742.RIDE (7433).
- Reduce Vehicle Emissions: Turn off your engine instead of idling, and avoid refueling your vehicle or topping off the tank during the heat of the day to minimize ozone pollution.
- Limit Gas-Powered Equipment: Refrain from mowing lawns or using other gas-powered equipment on Air Quality Alert days, as longer grass can help improve air and water quality.
