SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — In response to a series of unfounded bomb threats targeting schools within the Springfield City School District, Governor Mike DeWine has taken decisive action to bolster security across the district. Effective tomorrow, 36 troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Mobile Field Force will be deployed to each of the district’s 18 school buildings.
Governor DeWine emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe learning environment amidst the disruptions caused by these threats. “Many of these threats originate from overseas, aiming to exploit the current unrest in Springfield. We cannot allow these actions to succeed,” Governor DeWine stated. “Children should be able to attend school without fear, and parents must be assured of their safety. This increased security is a precautionary measure to address these hoaxes and restore peace of mind.”
The troopers will conduct thorough sweeps of the schools before students and staff arrive each morning and will remain on-site throughout the school day and during dismissal times to ensure safety.
Governor DeWine also announced additional security measures, including vulnerability assessments of critical infrastructure in Springfield conducted by Ohio Homeland Security. To further enhance situational awareness, various tower cameras will be provided to the Springfield Police Department. Additionally, bomb detection dogs will be stationed in Springfield daily as part of the ongoing security efforts.
In a related move, Governor DeWine had previously allocated $2.5 million to expand primary healthcare access in Springfield, addressing needs related to the recent influx of Haitian migrants. He has also directed the Ohio State Highway Patrol to assist local police with traffic enforcement.
These steps reflect the Governor’s commitment to maintaining safety and order in Springfield amidst the ongoing challenges.
