OHIO – The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed on Wednesday that a new tornado touched down during the storms that swept through Ohio on September 24, bringing the state’s total tornado count for the year to 73.

The storms, driven by the remnants of Hurricane Helene, triggered flash flood warnings and tornado alerts across various regions. In Lorain County, a tornado rated EF-0 tracked a quarter of a mile with peak winds reaching 75 mph and a maximum width of 25 yards.

Another weak tornado was reported in Preble County, east of Eaton. The NWS classified it as “weak,” similar to a third tornado that touched down in Hocking County. This latter tornado started in Laurelville and ended in Sugar Grove, primarily causing tree damage along its path, with maximum wind speeds recorded at 70 mph.

The storms on September 24 also set new rainfall records in several Ohio cities. Cincinnati received 2.03 inches of rain, surpassing the previous daily record of 1.87 inches set in 1972. Meanwhile, Dayton reported 1.50 inches of rainfall, breaking its former record of 1.15 inches established in 1945.

As the remnants of the hurricane continue to affect the region, residents are urged to stay informed about weather updates and potential hazards.
