Circleville, Ohio – October 4, 2024 – The Circleville City Council has officially appointed two new members to the Historical Review Board, reinforcing the city’s commitment to preserving its architectural heritage. The appointments were made during a council meeting where both applicants presented their qualifications and passion for historic preservation.
Christopher Burton, the first appointee, holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in history. He has a decade of experience with a County Historical Society, where he managed multiple historic properties, including an 18th-century log home and several others in the downtown area. Burton expressed his dedication to evaluating applications for certificates of appropriateness, which determine whether proposed changes to buildings in the historic district align with the community’s architectural character. “I would be willing to set aside personal preferences to ensure that decisions adhere to established criteria,” he stated.
Denise Simms, the second appointee, has worked at the Historical Society for nearly seven years and has deep personal ties to local history, including involvement with Mount Ogle. Sutherland emphasized her commitment to the preservation of historic properties, reflecting on her own experiences growing up in an older home. She also shared her enthusiasm for the city’s historic buildings, particularly the Mark Building and the Jones Building, highlighting their significance to Circleville’s heritage.
Both appointees assured council members they would have the time and dedication needed to personally review applications and visit proposed sites. The council commended their backgrounds and unanimously voted to forward their applications for approval.
With the addition of Burton and Sutherland, the Historical Review Board is set to enhance its efforts in maintaining and promoting the historical integrity of Circleville’s architectural landscape.
