A supplier of onions for McDonald’s has issued a recall of several batches of diced and peeled yellow onions following an E. coli outbreak linked to the fast-food chain’s Quarter Pounder sandwiches. The recall comes after McDonald’s temporarily removed the Quarter Pounder from its menu in response to reports of illnesses among customers.
According to US Foods, the supplier, approximately 50 people have fallen ill after consuming the affected sandwiches, with one reported death associated with the outbreak. McDonald’s officials confirmed that the recalled onions are the source of the E. coli contamination.
The recalled products include:
- 30-pound cases of Taylor Farms yellow jumbo peeled onions
- 5-pound cases of Taylor Farms yellow diced onions
- Six 5-pound cases of Taylor Farms yellow whole peeled onions
- Four 5-pound cases of Cross Valley Farms yellow diced onions
US Foods has urged suppliers to stop using the affected products immediately and to destroy any remaining stock, recording the number of cases disposed of.
While the Quarter Pounder has been removed from menus in some states, other McDonald’s items, such as the Big Mac and McDouble, are not affected by this recall. Illnesses linked to the outbreak have been reported in Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
