Circleville, Ohio – In a proactive move to tackle the escalating opioid crisis, Pickaway County Public Health has officially launched the Pickaway Overdose Response Team (PORT). This community-focused initiative aims to reduce opioid overdoses and connect individuals struggling with substance use disorder to essential resources.
As opioid-related issues continue to rise nationally and locally, PORT brings together a coalition of local law enforcement, first responders, healthcare providers, peer support agencies, and community leaders. The initiative seeks to streamline interventions and enhance support systems to prevent opioid-related fatalities in the area.
Key Features of PORT Include:
- Narcan Distribution: The team will provide Narcan, an opioid overdose reversal medication, to first responders and community members at risk of overdose.
- Referral Process: PORT has implemented a QR code system that allows first responders and local organizations to refer individuals directly to treatment and recovery services.
- Community Engagement: PORT will reach out to individuals and families affected by substance use, distributing resources such as Fentanyl test strips, drug disposal bags (Deterra), and educational materials on recognizing overdose signs and administering Narcan.
- Collaboration with First Responders: Law enforcement, EMS, and fire departments, including the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Sheriff’s Office, will be equipped with PORT resources and actively refer individuals to treatment.
Tiffany Singer, PORT Coordinator, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “We are excited to launch this critical program and work alongside our community partners to help those struggling with opioid addiction. By providing quick access to resources and treatment options, we aim to save lives and lessen the burden on our first responders.”
PORT is dedicated not only to saving lives but also to reducing the stigma associated with substance use disorder. Through collaboration with local leaders, healthcare professionals, and peer support agencies, the initiative aims to create a healthier, safer community where recovery is accessible to all.
