(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — With Thanksgiving just around the corner, Ohio drivers are gearing up for what is expected to be a busy travel weekend. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO), and AAA are teaming up to offer important tips and updates for motorists ahead of the holiday.
According to AAA, nearly 3 million Ohioans are expected to hit the road this Thanksgiving, marking one of the busiest travel periods of the year. As part of a media availability, AAA is urging drivers to ensure their vehicles are ready for the trip, including checking tire pressure, fluid levels, and ensuring children are properly secured in car and booster seats. AAA will also share updated travel projections and advice for drivers as the holiday weekend approaches.
In anticipation of increased traffic, ODOT is taking steps to minimize disruptions on the road. The department will reduce the size and scope of active work zones as much as possible, allowing for smoother travel. However, drivers are advised to stay alert and be prepared for possible delays, especially in areas with ongoing construction. For real-time traffic updates, ODOT recommends downloading the OHGO app, which provides access to more than 1,100 traffic cameras and up-to-date information on work zones and road conditions.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is also stepping up its presence on Ohio’s roadways to promote safe driving during the holiday. Last year, 13 people lost their lives in 12 fatal crashes over the Thanksgiving weekend. Notably, nine of the fatalities occurred in vehicles where seat belts were available, but not used, and five crashes involved impaired drivers. In response, troopers will be increasing patrols and enforcing traffic laws, reminding all drivers to buckle up, avoid driving under the influence, and obey speed limits.
To combat impaired driving, the Ohio Traffic Safety Office is offering $20 Lyft rideshare credits to Ohioans statewide. Beginning November 26, drivers can claim a Lyft credit by entering a special code into their app, which can then be used within 24 hours. The credits are part of a safety initiative funded by a grant from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).
As Ohioans prepare to travel for Thanksgiving, these agencies are working together to ensure that the roads are safer for everyone. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, stay alert, and take necessary precautions to make the journey as smooth and safe as possible.
