ATHENS, Ohio — A routine traffic stop turned into a significant drug bust on November 23, 2024, when deputies from the Athens County Sheriff’s Office discovered a large quantity of fentanyl, prescription pills, and over $2,700 in cash during an arrest.
The incident occurred at the intersection of State Route 682 and State Route 56 in Athens. Deputies initiated the stop and identified the driver as 45-year-old Steven Forgoress of Marietta. It was soon revealed that Forgoress had an active arrest warrant for Criminal Damaging issued by Athens Municipal Court. He was taken into custody on the warrant.
During the search of Forgoress, deputies uncovered a plastic bag containing suspected fentanyl. In addition to the drugs, deputies found $2,785 in cash. K9 Officer Cody was then deployed for a free air sniff of the vehicle’s exterior. The canine positively alerted to the presence of narcotics, prompting a more thorough search of the vehicle’s interior.
The search led to the discovery of more fentanyl, which was packaged for individual sale. Deputies also seized multiple digital scales, commonly used in drug distribution, and over 150 prescription pills.
Sheriff Rodney Smith praised the work of his deputies and the K9 unit. “Thanks to the diligent work of our K9 unit and deputies, we were able to intercept a significant amount of dangerous narcotics before they could reach our community,” Sheriff Smith said. “The amount of fentanyl recovered has the potential to kill over 50,000 people and exceeds eight times the quantity considered to be bulk in the state of Ohio. The seizure of these substances is a clear reminder of the ongoing threat posed by illicit drugs.”
Forgoress was arrested and transported to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail. An additional hold has been placed on him by the Ohio Adult Parole Authority.
All seized items, including the drugs, digital scales, and prescription pills, will be sent to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) for testing and analysis. Additional charges, including Trafficking in Drugs (Felony 1), are expected. Authorities also plan to pursue cash forfeiture, as the funds are believed to be linked to drug trafficking activities.
Sheriff Smith also thanked K9 Officer Cody and all deputies involved in the operation for their efforts in making the successful bust. The investigation is ongoing.
