Pickaway County – This week was the first award for the Christmas Light Challenge brought to you by Ruoff Mortgage and ERA Martin and Associates we tagged along to promote these amazing light displays in our area.

CLARKSBURG, Ohio – For more than a decade, the Cox family’s love for Christmas has turned their home into a glowing masterpiece of holiday cheer, earning them an award for their spectacular light display this year.

The family began their tradition in Williamsport 13 years ago, where they set up an elaborate holiday light display on their quarter-acre property. In 2020, they relocated to a two-acre property outside Clarksburg, allowing them to expand their display to more than 30,000 lights this year, nearly doubling the 20,000 lights they had in Williamsport.

“This has been a tradition for us,” said Ed Cox, a firefighter and EMT with nearly 17 years of service. “It started with my dad, who went all out with Christmas lights when I was a kid. I always said I’d do the same when I grew up. Now, we’ve taken it even further, and it’s become something our community looks forward to every year.”

A Family Tradition of Joy

The festive display has become a labor of love for the Cox family, starting the day after Halloween to ensure everything is ready by Thanksgiving. Each year, the lights go on only after Thanksgiving dinner, a tradition that respects the spirit of both holidays.

“My wife loves Christmas,” he shared. “She starts decorating right after Halloween, and this is her favorite time of year. For us, it’s about spreading joy and giving back to the community. Seeing the smiles and hearing the excitement from kids and families makes the effort worth it.”

The display features a series of themed sections that reflect the family’s personality and interests. From an ocean-themed area with a surfing Santa and sea creatures to a farm scene that recalls their days raising goats and chickens, the display is as personal as it is festive.

“We even added a turtle with a fish fishing off its back this year,” he said with a laugh. “It’s a collection of scenes that represent who we are as a family. The snowmen represent our family, its all personal to us.”

Looking to the future, the family plans to double or triple their setup in the next few years, thanks to energy-efficient LED lights that allow them to expand without significantly increasing their electricity costs, “Regardless it at least doubles our bill during this month.”

Spreading Cheer Beyond Their Yard

In addition to their own display, the family promotes other holiday setups in the area, encouraging visitors to take a scenic tour of nearby homes.

“There’s another great display about four miles south on State Route 207,” he explained. “You can make a loop, see our lights, and then head out toward Circleville to catch even more. It’s a great way to explore the community during the holidays.”

Recognition for Their Efforts

Winning the local holiday light competition has been the cherry on top for the family. “It’s exciting to be recognized for something we’re so passionate about,” Cox said. “The sign announcing our win is out front, and I’ve even got a spotlight on it so everyone can see. My wife’s making a new one to keep up all season.”

A Season of Gratitude

For the family, Christmas is more than just decorations; it’s a time to reflect, give back, and celebrate together.

“We feel incredibly fortunate, and this is our way of sharing that joy with everyone,” he said. “It’s not just about the lights. It’s about bringing happiness to people during the holidays. I think my dad would be proud of what we’ve done.” Cox reflecting on losing his dad a few years ago.

With plans to continue growing their display and spreading holiday cheer, the family’s passion for Christmas lights has not only brightened their yard but also the hearts of everyone who visits.
