The United States Postal Service (USPS) will halt mail delivery on Thursday, January 9, in observance of the National Day of Mourning for the late former President Jimmy Carter. President Joe Biden declared this day of remembrance following Carter’s passing, with his official state funeral set to take place at the Washington National Cathedral.

On this designated day, USPS facilities will be closed, though there will be limited package delivery to maintain the flow of operations. Regular mail delivery and services are expected to resume on Friday, January 10.

In addition to suspending mail services, all Postal Service facilities are mandated to fly the U.S. flag at half-staff through January 29 as a mark of respect for the former president. The U.S. Supreme Court, the stock market, and federal government offices will also close on Thursday in recognition of the National Day of Mourning.

Biden is scheduled to deliver the eulogy at Carter’s funeral, with President-elect Donald Trump announcing his attendance at the ceremony. The last National Day of Mourning occurred in December 2018 following the death of former President George H.W. Bush.
