Athens, OH (January 28, 2025) — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash involving a commercial vehicle that occurred on US-33 in Athens County on the morning of January 28, 2025.
According to troopers, a 2024 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on US-33, just west of the southern US-50 split, when the vehicle veered through the median and crossed into the eastbound lanes. The Freightliner then collided with a 1993 Chevrolet Cavalier, which was heading eastbound. After the impact, the tractor-trailer continued off the roadway, crashing through a guardrail and over an embankment.
The driver of the Freightliner, Wallace K. Thorne, 69, of Taylor, Michigan, was transported to OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital by EMS for treatment. The driver of the Chevrolet Cavalier, Ariann J. Sizemore, 25, of Middleport, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Athens County Coroner’s Office.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Athens City Police Department, Athens Fire Department, Athens County EMS, Athens County Coroner’s Office, and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
The crash remains under investigation, and further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
