Punxsutawney, PA – Winter isn’t over yet—at least according to Punxsutawney Phil. On Groundhog Day 2025, the famous weather-predicting groundhog saw his shadow, signaling six more weeks of cold weather.

Since 1886, Phil has predicted extended winter 107 times out of 128 recorded forecasts, with only 21 predictions of an early spring. There have also been nine years where no official forecast was made. According to Groundhog.org, Phil emerges from hibernation and directs the Inner Circle president to the correct scroll containing his weather prediction.

But not all groundhogs agree. In Ohio, Buckeye Chuck had a different outlook, predicting an early spring. Hundreds gathered in Marion for the annual Buckeye Chuck Day event, eagerly awaiting the state’s furry forecaster’s call.

While Pennsylvania residents may need to keep their snow shovels handy, Ohioans might have a warmer transition into spring—if Buckeye Chuck has it right. As always, time will tell which groundhog’s forecast proves true.

Between 2014 and 2023, Phil was right 30% of the time, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says. He was correct in predicting a longer winter in 2014 and an early spring in 2016 and 2020. Since 1887, Phil has seen his shadow 107 times.
