COLUMBUS, OH – State Senator Tim Schaffer (R-Lancaster) has introduced Senate Resolution 29, urging Congress to restore stolen Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for victims of fraud and implement stronger anti-theft measures in the program.

SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card fraud has surged in the past year and a half, with nearly $15 million stolen from Ohio families in need. Up until December 2024, the federal government reimbursed victims of SNAP fraud, but that protection expired and was not included in the latest federal continuing resolution.

“These families are losing their benefits through no fault of their own,” Schaffer said. “Congress must act to restore these lost benefits and strengthen security measures to protect those in need.”

The resolution calls for modern security updates to SNAP EBT cards, such as chip-enabled technology, to reduce card skimming and fraud.

“We must protect taxpayer dollars and ensure Ohio’s most vulnerable families aren’t left without food because of criminals,” Schaffer emphasized.

Senate Resolution 29 now moves to the Senate Workforce Development Committee for further consideration.
