Ohios Burn Ban Starts in March

COLUMBUS, Ohio – As warmer weather approaches, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry is urging residents to follow state outdoor burning regulations and take necessary precautions when burning debris. With Ohio’s spring wildfire season running from March through May, officials remind Ohioans that most outdoor burning in unincorporated areas is prohibited from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“Each spring, wildfires ignite in Ohio due to careless trash and debris burning,” said ODNR Division of Forestry Chief Dan Balser. “If Ohioans follow safe burning practices and obey regulations, they can help prevent wildfires.”

The seasonal burning restrictions, outlined in Ohio Revised Code 1503.18, are in place due to the increased risk of wildfires fueled by dry grass, leaves, and gusty winds. Even a small fire can quickly spread out of control. In incorporated areas, local laws may differ, and additional temporary restrictions may be issued if wildfire risks escalate.

To reduce the risk of wildfires, ODNR encourages residents to consider alternative disposal methods like composting. If burning is necessary during unrestricted hours, ODNR recommends using a 55-gallon drum with a weighted screen lid to contain the flames.

Residents are urged to follow these safety guidelines when burning debris:

  • Check current and forecasted weather conditions.
  • Keep tools and water nearby to control flames.
  • Never leave a fire unattended.
  • Review state and local burning regulations.
  • Consult with the local fire department for additional precautions.

The ODNR Division of Forestry also reminds Ohioans to comply with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s open burn regulations, which prohibit burning food waste, dead animals, rubber, grease, asphalt, and petroleum-based materials. Violators may face citations and fines.
