CHILLICOTHE, OH – Pixelle Specialty Solutions announced the immediate closure of its Chillicothe paper mill on Tuesday, dealing a major economic blow to the Ross County community. The decision will impact approximately 900 employees and ends over a century of paper manufacturing at the historic site.
The closure, part of a broader strategy to realign Pixelle’s operational footprint, is aimed at strengthening the company’s core facilities in Spring Grove and Fremont, Pennsylvania. Pixelle President and CEO Ross Bushnell called the decision “extremely difficult” and praised the Chillicothe team for their service and contributions. Some production lines, including carbonless sheet and Defensa paper products, will be relocated to the Spring Grove facility to ensure continuity for customers.
In response to the announcement, the Ross County Board of Commissioners expressed their deep concern and pledged to work with state and local leaders to address the economic impact.
“This abrupt announcement represents a significant loss for our community, especially for employees and their families,” the board stated. “Paper manufacturing has existed at this site for over 100 years and has employed the hardworking people of our community for generations.”
Commissioners Jack Everson, James Lowe, and David Glass emphasized the importance of proactive leadership in stabilizing the local economy and creating new opportunities through innovation and business development.
Pixelle has committed to supporting employees during the transition with job placement assistance, access to workforce resources, and collaboration with union representatives.
While the closure marks the end of an era for Chillicothe, local officials say the community’s resilience and leadership will be critical in moving forward.
