CLAY TOWNSHIP, OH — April 17, 2025
Gallia County Sheriff Matt Champlin has confirmed that carbon monoxide poisoning was the cause of death for five individuals found deceased in a Clay Township residence on Tuesday morning.

The victims were discovered by a family member at the home located along State Route 7 South. The preliminary findings, based on the ongoing investigation and the determination of the Gallia County Coroner, point to carbon monoxide exposure as the cause of the tragic deaths.

Two of the victims have been identified as Brian A. Doss, 35, and Lora Schuman, 34. The remaining three victims were children, all residents of the home.

“We have arrived at a preliminary determination in regards to the deceased bodies of five individuals… Based upon our investigation and the determination made by the Gallia County Coroner, it has been found that these individuals perished as a result of an exposure to carbon monoxide gas inside of their residence,” Sheriff Champlin stated.

Though a cause has been identified, authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as they work to gather more details surrounding the incident.

“Today’s tragic loss of life has shattered and changed the lives of many forever,” said Sheriff Champlin. “As I requested earlier, please continue to lift this family and our community up in prayer. This is the kind of tragedy we all hope never to experience.”

Officials are reminding the public of the silent dangers of carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas, and are encouraging residents to ensure their homes are equipped with working carbon monoxide detectors.

More information will be shared as the investigation continues.
