OHIO — Some southeast Ohio residents got an unexpected wake-up call early Tuesday morning as a minor earthquake shook the region.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a 3.1-magnitude earthquake occurred shortly after 4 a.m. near Senecaville Lake, just east of Zanesville and south of Cambridge, along Interstate 77. The quake registered at a depth of approximately 3.1 miles.

While no damage has been reported, a few residents in the area noted feeling light shaking during the early hours.

The USGS classifies earthquakes of this size as weak, and they are typically not strong enough to cause significant structural damage. Still, they can surprise those in the vicinity, especially in regions not commonly associated with seismic activity.

This marks one of more than 30 earthquakes reported in Ohio so far in 2025, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Ohio does experience occasional seismic activity, though it’s often minor and localized.

For updates and to track recent seismic activity in the state, residents can visit the ODNR or USGS websites.
