AEP Ohio Announces Summer Rate Hikes for Some Electric Customers, Savings for Others

COLUMBUS, OH — AEP Ohio is alerting customers to upcoming changes in electricity rates that could impact monthly bills starting this spring and summer. While some customers will see increases in their generation supply charges, others may benefit from a slight reduction in transmission costs.

Who’s Affected?
The changes primarily affect residential customers on AEP Ohio’s Standard Service Offer (SSO) — the default generation supply option for those who do not shop for electricity through competitive suppliers or participate in governmental aggregation.

What’s Changing?
Beginning in June, residential customers on the SSO plan using 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month can expect to see their generation supply charge increase by about $27. AEP Ohio emphasized that this charge is a pass-through cost from generation suppliers, and the company does not profit from it.

For all residential customers, regardless of supplier, transmission charges are expected to drop by approximately $9 per month, with additional reductions of around $5 for other distribution-related services.

Why the Increase?
The rise in generation supply costs stems from a recent auction held by PJM, the regional transmission organization that oversees the electric grid across 13 states, including Ohio. The auction saw higher prices for electricity generation capacity, driven by increased demand and limited supply. These market-based costs are passed directly to customers without markup.
