LANCASTER, Ohio (April 6, 2025) — After nearly a dozen years at the helm of one of Fairfield County’s most beloved hobby destinations, Patti and Don, owners of The Smoke Stack Hobby Shop, have announced their retirement. The news marks the end of an era for the Lancaster community and generations of modelers who found a second home inside the shop’s welcoming walls.
On April 1st, the couple would have celebrated 12 years since taking over the business from its founder, Dale Kennedy, who opened the shop in 1977. True to Dale’s legacy, Patti and Don expanded the store’s reach and reputation, transforming a modest 2,500-square-foot space into an 8,000-square-foot hub complete with indoor rock crawling tracks, operating model train layouts, and a warm community spirit.
“Our customers are some of the best and most loyal any shop owner could ask for,” the couple said in a farewell message. “Many of you have become like family. It’s been an honor to be part of your lives and the broader Lancaster community.”

In addition to expanding the store, Patti and Don created a destination by embracing the local model-building community. From the addition of the Hocking Valley Model Railroad Club to signature events like RC Day, in-house model shows, the Fourth of July Parade, and the Lancaster Hobby Expo, the shop became more than a store — it became a gathering place.
They also expressed deep appreciation for their staff, several of whom have been with them from the very beginning. “We’ve had the pleasure of watching some of our crew grow from high school students into incredible adults,” Don said. “And our senior team members have been invaluable mentors.”
While the shop’s final regular business day is Saturday, March 29, fans will have a last chance to visit during the Lancaster Hobby Expo on April 11 and 12, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. A Modelers Meet & Greet will be held on Friday, April 11 from 3–6 p.m., followed by the shop’s final Model Show on Saturday, April 12.
Customers are encouraged to redeem any gift cards before the closure and are welcome to browse everything from model kits to store fixtures, all available for purchase. The website will go offline after April 12, but select inventory will remain accessible through the store’s eBay platform.
As they prepare for this next chapter, Patti and Don are filled with gratitude. “Each sale supported a local resident and helped make Lancaster a better place to live. We’re thankful beyond words for your loyalty and love.”
