Update – Ross County Pedestrian Killed on US-23

Chillicothe, Ohio (February 12, 2024): A tragic accident claimed the life of a pedestrian on US Route 23 in Ross County this evening. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, which occurred near milepost 8 around 6:08 PM.

According to investigators, a 2006 Pontiac Torrent driven by 53-year-old Melissa Irvin of Waverly, Ohio, struck a male pedestrian, 53-year-old Timothy Oyer of Chillicothe, who was crossing the highway westbound. Sadly, Mr. Oyer succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Ms. Irvin sustained minor injuries in the crash and was transported to Adena Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Ross County Sheriff’s Office, Scioto Township Fire/EMS, VA Fire Department, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and the Ross County Coroner’s Office. The southbound lanes of US Route 23 were closed for approximately three hours while crews investigated the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
