Pickaway County, OH — “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” This powerful motto embodies the spirit of greatness and resilience that defines the Special Olympics worldwide.

For over five decades, the Special Olympics has been a beacon of hope and opportunity for individuals with intellectual disabilities, thanks to the vision of Eunice Kennedy Shriver. It has provided millions of athletes around the globe with the chance to compete in a variety of sports, both individual and unified.

In Pickaway County, this mission is alive and thriving. Athletes ranging from 8 years old to over 60 have proudly represented the county in local and state competitions. These dedicated individuals participate in a wide range of sports including track and field, softball, basketball, powerlifting, and golf.

Behind every athlete’s success is a story of determination and dedication. Pickaway County’s Special Olympics athletes undergo rigorous training, supported by a network of friends, family members, and community volunteers. Approximately 80 active athletes participate in programs that highlight their strengths and capabilities, fostering an environment where everyone can excel.

“Our focus is on showcasing what our athletes can do, rather than what they cannot,” says Jeremy Joyce, Coordinator of Pickaway County Special Olympics. The organization offers a variety of programs including Track & Field, Powerlifting, Unified and Individual Skills Softball, Traditional and Individual Skills Basketball, and Unified Golf.

Financial support from local donations and fundraisers is crucial to the success of Pickaway County Special Olympics. Funds go towards uniforms, sports equipment, tournament fees, officials, and travel expenses for athletes attending various competitions and events. Notably, athletes and their families do not bear any financial burden to participate.
