Chillicothe, OH – A routine traffic stop on E Main St led to the arrest of a local man on multiple charges, including obstructing official business, resisting arrest, and assaulting a police dog.
On March 22, 2025, at approximately 5:36 AM, Officer Jonathan Davis initiated the stop after observing a Grey Dodge Durango stop past the designated stop bar at the intersection of Renick Ave and E Main St. The vehicle turned west onto E Main St, where the officer followed and stopped it near the intersection of E Main St and S Watt St.
Upon approaching the vehicle, Officer Davis called for a K9 unit while speaking with the driver, 29-year-old Nicholas Powell. After gathering the necessary paperwork for a citation related to failure to stop at a signal, the K9 unit arrived and began performing a free air sniff around the vehicle.
However, Powell became disruptive, yelling at the K9 and interfering with its work. The deputy on the scene then requested Powell exit the vehicle, but Powell refused to comply with multiple lawful commands. Officers then removed the window from the driver’s side door, gained control of Powell’s arms, and, after unlocking the door, removed him from the vehicle. Powell was placed on the ground and handcuffed.
The officers conducted an inventory of the vehicle, as Powell was not in possession of a valid driver’s license and the vehicle was being towed. After securing Powell’s belongings, he was transported to the Ross County Jail. During transport, Powell continued to resist, refusing to exit the cruiser once at the jail. Jail deputies assisted in taking Powell inside.
Powell was booked on charges of assaulting a police dog, obstructing official business, and resisting arrest. He was advised of his court appearance and given a copy of his citation. The investigation is ongoing.
