Circleville, OH – A local resident from Pickaway County has achieved a remarkable victory at the 2024 Cairns Cup, a premier global event in adaptive golf. This year’s tournament was held at the Cherry Creek Golf Club in Shelby Township, Michigan.

For those unfamiliar with the Cairns Cup, also known as “The Billy,” the event originated from the Phoenix Cup 2018 held in Florida. During that competition, a team of disabled golfers from the USA and Europe faced off at the Rotonda Golf Club. The tournament took on a poignant tone with the passing of Billy Cairns, a member of the European team, the day after arriving in Florida. In honor of Cairns, both teams decided to establish the Cairns Cup to celebrate and promote excellence in adaptive golf.

The Cairns Cup aims to showcase the exceptional skills of adaptive golfers and encourage more people with disabilities to pursue their passion for the game. This year’s event saw teams from various countries, with Circleville native Brandon Williams part of representing Team USA. Williams was the only player from Ohio to compete.

Williams, who lost his right leg and most of the function in his left arm due to a car accident in 2005, took up golf as part of his rehabilitation. His dedication to the sport paid off when he was selected as one of the 16 members of Team USA for the 2024 Cairns Cup.

The 2024 Cairns Cup was notable as it was the first time the event was held in the United States, having previously taken place in Europe. The tournament’s return to Europe is already anticipated for the next edition.

Williams’ victory at the Cairns Cup not only marks a personal triumph but also highlights the growing recognition and support for adaptive golf on the international stage.
