At this year’s Circleville Pumpkin Show, the Big Wheel Race drew excitement and showcased local talent, with notable performances from familiar faces. Last year’s champion did not place but his brother, Brycen Aman, secured third place this time around, Their parents shared that the siblings had been practicing at home, hoping both would make it to the podium. While that didn’t happen this year, the family’s dedication was evident.
Competition was difficult this year but Grace Klinebriel took the gold after a come-from-behind finish, Quin Cooper who came in second, almost had the race won but a minor mistake towards the finish made for a close race.
The race also featured last year’s second-place winner, who returned but didn’t finish in the top ranks this time. Despite these setbacks, the spirit of friendly competition remained strong.
Bob Foster from the local Rotary Club shared insights into the organization’s role in the community. “Rotary is dedicated to raising funds to support various initiatives, including local food pantries and scholarships for high school students. This October, we’re collecting socks for the homeless, which will be distributed through the food pantry.”
Foster highlighted the global outreach efforts as well, noting their partnership with a sister Rotary club to support an orphanage in Uganda. “Our motto is ‘think globally, act locally,’” he said.
The Big Wheel Race has been a cherished tradition since 1977, originally attracting kids who were already familiar with big wheels. Now, many participants are trying them for the first time. “For these kids, this event might be the highlight of their Pumpkin Show experience,” Foster explained, emphasizing the joy it brings to the community.
The event saw a total of 56 sign-ups, although some participants didn’t show up. Walk-in racers can compete but are not eligible for awards, underscoring the importance of pre-registration for future events.
Organizing the race required significant effort from Rotary volunteers, with around 16 members helping to ensure everything ran smoothly. Foster thanked the community for its support, noting that the city’s cooperation, especially with street lining, contributes to the event’s success.
As the Big Wheel Race continues to be a beloved part of the Pumpkin Show, it not only celebrates local talent but also reinforces community bonds through shared experiences and friendly competition.
