Circleville, OH – A dedicated group of local men and organizations came together to honor the memory of 9/11 with a special commemoration in Pickaway County.

The initiative was sparked by a conversation in the immediate aftermath of the 2001 attacks. “We got to do something to commemorate the 9/11 events,” said Pete Hardinger and Ned Young of the Soldiers Monumental Association in Circleville. Their call to action led to a meeting with then-Pickaway County Commissioner John Stevens, where they proposed placing a plaque on the firehouse in Circleville.

Commissioner Stevens suggested a more prominent location, and with his support, the project gained momentum. “Let’s put it on the front of the County Courthouse,” Stevens recommended.

The proposal quickly garnered support from various local groups, including the City of Circleville, Pickaway County Commissioners, Amvets Post #2256, American Legion Post #134, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3331, Disabled American Veterans #70, Marine Corps League Detachment, and The Soldiers Monumental Association of Pickaway County. Together, they worked diligently to create a meaningful tribute in time for the first anniversary of the attacks.

On September 11, 2002, hundreds gathered in front of the courthouse for a 30-minute ceremony honoring those who have served and protected the nation. The Circleville Herald reported that the event was a significant moment of remembrance and respect.

“The plaque stands as a rare commemorative piece dedicated to the 9/11 events,” said a representative from the Soldiers Monumental Association. “We should be very proud of where it hangs and what it represents.”

Today, the plaque continues to be a symbol of tribute and resilience, prominently displayed at the Pickaway County Courthouse, 207 South Court Street.
