COLUMBUS, OH — As the winter heating season approaches, Columbia Gas of Ohio is reminding customers about available financial assistance programs to help manage utility bills. The 2024-25 Special Reconnect Order (SRO) and the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) are designed to provide support for those in need.
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) has announced that the SRO will be active from October 14, 2024, to April 18, 2025. This program allows customers facing disconnection or those who have already been shut off to reconnect their service for a fee of just $175. Additional reconnection fees may apply, and customers using the SRO must also establish a payment plan for any outstanding balance.
In addition to the SRO, HEAP offers a one-time benefit directly applied to customers’ utility bills. This federally funded program is administered by the Ohio Department of Development and is available to households with incomes at or below 175 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. Eligible customers can access HEAP through their local community action agency.
Columbia Gas also provides a range of payment plans to help customers manage their energy costs more effectively. These plans are designed to make utility bills predictable and easier to budget for.
For more information on payment assistance programs or to discuss payment plans, customers can call Columbia Gas at 1-800-344-4077. The company’s Customer Care team is available to assist customers in finding a solution tailored to their needs.
As temperatures drop and heating systems are turned on, Columbia Gas urges residents to prioritize safety in their homes. Customers should regularly check carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, avoid using non-heating appliances for warmth, keep flammable materials away from heaters, and ensure that vents and meters are clear of snow and ice.
In the event of a natural gas smell, residents should leave the area immediately and call 911, followed by contacting Columbia Gas at 1-800-344-4077 for assistance.
