Columbus, OH – As colder weather brings the risk of ice, snow, and frigid temperatures, Columbia Gas of Ohio is encouraging customers to take proactive steps to ensure their homes remain safe and warm this winter.
Outside Your Home
- Clear Snow and Ice from Vents: Remove snow and ice from intake and exhaust vents to prevent carbon monoxide buildup and ensure your appliances operate properly.
- Keep Your Gas Meter Accessible: Ensure your natural gas meter is always clear and visible for maintenance or emergencies. Avoid letting snow completely cover the meter, and never use a shovel or hammer to break up snow or ice near it.
Inside Your Home
- Space Heater Safety: If using space heaters, place them on hard, level surfaces and maintain at least three feet of clearance from flammable items like bedding, curtains, or rugs.
- Inspect Heating Equipment: Ensure all heating appliances are inspected and operating properly, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Never Use Ovens for Heat: Ovens are intended to cook food, not heat your home. Always operate ovens with the door closed.
- Avoid Indoor Fires: Do not burn charcoal or operate a generator indoors or in enclosed spaces.
- Clean Your Chimney: Inspect and clean your chimney at least once a year to prevent blockages before using your fireplace.

If you detect the “rotten egg” odor of natural gas or suspect a gas leak:
