Washington, D.C. – Representative Mike Carey (R-OH) announced a significant funding boost for public transportation improvements in central Ohio. Awarded by the Department of Transportation, a $41.9 million grant will be directed towards the West Broad Street Bus Rapid Transportation Project in Franklin County.
“The population of Franklin County has witnessed a substantial surge in recent years,” remarked Congressman Carey. “Unfortunately, our current transportation infrastructure hasn’t kept pace with this growth.” He expressed optimism that this grant will be instrumental in ensuring that central Ohio benefits from new, affordable public transportation options connecting Columbus with surrounding areas within Franklin County.
The West Broad Street Bus Rapid Transportation Project encompasses the construction of 16 brand new stations, along with the development of a dedicated park-and-ride transit center. This strategic initiative aims to address disparities in access to affordable public transportation by targeting areas of Columbus currently lacking the same level of service as other neighborhoods.
Furthermore, the project incorporates funding allocated towards improvements for bicyclists and pedestrians within the region. This comprehensive approach underscores a commitment to enhancing overall transportation options and fostering a more connected and accessible community.
The Congressman’s successful effort to secure this grant signifies a positive step forward in addressing the transportation needs of a growing central Ohio population. The project is anticipated to provide residents with enhanced mobility choices, promote economic development, and contribute to a more vibrant and sustainable community.
