Kayvon E. Smothers, 27, of Detroit, Michigan, was found guilty of fleeing and eluding and sentenced to 18 months in prison, along with a 10-year driver’s license suspension. The charges stem from a high-speed chase through Pickaway County and into Ross County on July 6, 2023.
According to the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Department, Smothers was driving a 2021 Jeep Compass with a suspended license and was suspected of possessing a firearm and drugs. When Deputy Campbell attempted to stop the vehicle, Smothers sped off, reaching speeds of up to 110 mph and attempting to slam on his brakes to hit the deputy’s vehicle.
The chase ended in Ross County, where Smothers and passenger Hasan Colbert, 28, were taken into custody. A search of the vehicle yielded a clear bag containing multiple blue pills on the passenger seat. Both men were charged with various crimes, including failure to comply, possession of drugs, and trafficking in drugs.
