LANCASTER, OH – The Fairfield County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center has closed its kennels after several dogs tested positive for Parvovirus (Parvo), the shelter announced in a Facebook post.

Despite the closure, adoptions are still ongoing as shelter staff work to treat affected dogs and prevent further spread of the virus.

The shelter is currently in urgent need of supplies, including crates, bleach, and waste bags, and is asking the community for donations to help with the situation.

Understanding Parvo

Parvo is a highly contagious virus that attacks a dog’s bone marrow and small intestines, and in very young puppies, it can affect the heart. Symptoms include vomiting, fever, and dehydration, and it can be life-threatening if not treated.

The shelter is reminding pet owners that Parvo is preventable with proper vaccinations and that treatment is available for infected dogs.

For those looking to help, donations can be dropped off at the shelter. More updates will be provided as the situation develops.
