Fatal Crash in Newport Claims Life of Chillicothe Motorcyclist

NEWPORT, Ohio, Aug. 16, 2024 — A tragic accident early this morning claimed the life of a Chillicothe man. At approximately 5:50 a.m., Shelby County Deputies, along with Fort Loramie Fire and Rescue, responded to a serious three-vehicle collision at the intersection of State Route 66 and Fort Recovery Road in Newport.

According to preliminary investigations, a motorcycle was rear-ended by a pickup truck, causing the motorcycle to crash into the rear of an SUV. The impact resulted in the immediate ejection of the motorcycle’s rider, identified as Jack Howbert of Chillicothe. Howbert was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both the driver of the pickup truck and the driver of the SUV received medical treatment at the scene but were later released. The accident remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the exact cause of the crash.
