Fatal Crash on US Route 23 Claims Life of Chillicothe Man

A devastating multi-vehicle crash occurred on US Route 23 North in Pickaway County, resulting in the loss of life of 52-year-old Barry Arthur of Chillicothe.

According to Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey, the incident happened on August 4, 2024, at approximately 5:16 A.M. when a 1998 Chevrolet truck, driven by Kelsea Gussler, slowed down to turn left, causing a trailer to remain on the roadway. A 2022 blue Nissan, driven by Barry Arthur, rear-ended the trailer, and shortly after, Arthur exited his vehicle and was struck by a 2011 black Ford Escape driven by Timothy Gilliam.

Emergency responders pronounced Arthur dead at the scene at 5:29 A.M. Kelsea Gussler and passenger Michael Litchfield were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, while Timothy Gilliam was treated and released at the scene.

Sheriff Hafey expressed gratitude to the responding agencies, including Harrison Township Fire and EMS, City of Circleville Fire and EMS, Pickaway Township Fire and EMS, Circleville Police Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Pickaway County Coroner’s Office, and the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The crash remains under investigation by the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office.
