Fairfield County, OH – Authorities are investigating a fatal field fire that broke out on March 11, 2025, in the 9000 block of Palmer Road NW, resulting in the tragic death of a local man.

According to the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders, including the Basil Fire Department and EMS, were dispatched at approximately 1:49 p.m. after reports of an open burn that had grown out of control near Palmer and Smoke Roads. Upon arrival, firefighters found the blaze spreading rapidly due to dry and windy conditions.

During suppression efforts, responders discovered an adult male, later identified as 61-year-old Boyd Bowman, who had suffered severe burn injuries. He was transported to OSU Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time,” said Sheriff Alex Lape. “This incident is a tragic reminder of the dangers of open burning, particularly in dry conditions.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Basil Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal. Officials are urging residents to follow all safety guidelines and local regulations regarding outdoor burning to prevent similar tragedies.
